Strictly No Dancing

Author: Beffrey  //  Category: Mixes

Recorded in two sittings; one very recently and one about a year ago.

A mostly relaxing mix with occasional sinister and dark overtones.

Features two specially recorded monologues: one written by Jungle Jim about a dream he’d had, and the other is of unknown origin, although we suspect credit for this goes to Mr. Big Daddy Stu, Bangor, circa 1998.

Also featuring some live recordings from San Francisco Airport, a monologue about democracy by E.M. Forster, lots of outdoor sounds and various characters from BBC3′s Bellamy’s People.

Chocolate Hostage

Author: Beffrey  //  Category: Mixes

The result of two weekends spent mainly laughing at poo. An 84 BPM Hip hop mix, featuring ‘Unemployed Welshmen’ from Blue Jam by Chris Morris, Paddy Considine and Shane Meadows discussing poo euphemisms and scratching aplenty.

We had a live webcam broadcast on the 2nd session during which, while we were having some computer problems, we were texted some sound advice from my mate Heavy Chris to ‘turn it off and on again’. We did and it worked! Cheers Chris! :)

I recently discovered an old box of tapes I had stored at my mum’s house and have been listening to them again with great interest. I haven’t heard most of these for over 10 years and what’s been most interesting for me is being able to chart my changes in musical taste from the ages of 18 to 23.

These were compiled in the days before I’d even thought of getting decks, the home pc was non-existant (for anything useful anyway) and everything was done by recording in real time from CDs and records to audio cassettes (remember them?!) ‘Burning a CD’ in a minute or two was the stuff of a madman’s dreams. No, if you wanted to make a tape, you had to do it the hard way: record each track one by one. It usually took weeks!

The early tapes are mainly rock and punk but these gradually change throughout the years to funk, acid jazz and hip-hop (although the rock/punk roots are still very evident right up to the last mixtape!) It’s great to hear all of these again and, after thinking about what I would have done then if I had the equipment I have now, I decided it would be a good idea touch these up a little one by one and make them available for whoever’s interested.

This is the first of a full series of around ten recently remastered old mixtapes ranging from 1991 to 1996. This is one of the more recent recordings (1996) and was recorded at the point where I had just decided that getting a pair of turntables would be a good move. All the tunes are in exactly the same order as they were. I’ve just cut the gaps between each tune, sorted the EQs and levels. I’ll gradually upload more in the near future.

In places, this is probably the most twisted, unpleasant mix we’ve done. The original mix was done by Jungle Jim and then overdubbed by the both of us in one session.

A lot of the spoken stuff that’s featured on this mix was originally recorded for a dark comedy / sketch show we wrote called Shy Talk (much in the style of Blue Jam by Chris Morris) back in 1998. It never got used in the end as the radio station we were going to appear on (Storm FM, a local student radio station for Bangor, North Wales) never actually got a licence. We still have all the original material though. We actually have the finished shows too and will probably upload them at some point.

We’ve also started working on a video for this mix. It’s quite an ambitious project though, so it’s doubtful there’ll be anything finished until 2009.

Great version of Little Fluffy Clouds by The Orb. Only really makes sense if you’re familiar with the original…

Thanks to Heavy Chris for making me aware of this one! ;)
