Only really makes sense if you’re familiar with the original…

Compilation Tape - Spring 1996

I recently discovered an old box of tapes I had stored at my mum’s house and have been listening to them again with great interest. I haven’t heard most of these for over 10 years and what’s been most interesting for me is being able to chart my changes in musical taste from the ages of 18 to 23.
These were compiled in the days before I’d even thought of getting decks, the home pc was non-existant (for anything useful anyway) and everything was done by recording in real time from CDs and records to audio cassettes (remember them?!) ‘Burning a CD’ in a minute or two was the stuff of a madman’s dreams. No, if you wanted to make a tape, you had to do it the hard way: record each track one by one. It usually took weeks!
The early tapes are mainly rock and punk but these gradually change throughout the years to funk, acid jazz and hip-hop (although the rock/punk roots are still very evident right up to the last mixtape!) It’s great to hear all of these again and, after thinking about what I would have done then if I had the equipment I have now, I decided it would be a good idea touch these up a little one by one and make them available for whoever’s interested.
This is the first of a full series of around ten recently remastered old mixtapes ranging from 1991 to 1996. This is one of the more recent recordings (1996) and was recorded at the point where I had just decided that getting a pair of turntables would be a good move. All the tunes are in exactly the same order as they were. I’ve just cut the gaps between each tune, sorted the EQs and levels. I’ll gradually upload more in the near future.
